Gratuitous Disney references

In the run up to the opening I thought it would be interesting to see how many unpaid [by Disney ] adverts Disney manages to squeeze out of the local media

1. A Government announcement telling us how to get to Disneyland

2. HK Standard HK Confidential

Mickey buses on hold

Hong Kong's Transport Department has freaked out the residents of Disco Bay, who want to run a bus service to Sunny Bay, the Disneyland port of call. The distance is about the same as it is to Tung Chung, where everybody catches the MTR for civilization, but the ride to the new Disney train is much faster because there are no traffic lights, no congestion and the walk to the new MTR station is short and covered. So, according to Dbay, the Disco Bay community magazine, the bus line went out and bought three new buses for the run to Disneyland- only to have the Transport Department tell them tough luck. They would have to make do with the nine they've already got. But, we're told by the Transport people, that's only temporary. Eventually they'll get to use the new buses too. So don't get discouraged, Disco Bay. You'll soon get to ride to the train with the mouse ears.

3.from the SCMP

Disney hotels built with a local touch
Fung shui principles and Chinese superstitions have been taken into account in the design of Hong Kong Disneyland's first two hotels, which were unveiled yesterday.

4.from the SCMP

MTR expects boon from new rail link to theme park
The Disneyland resort is expected to attract 30,000 more passengers a day for the MTR Corporation, earning it at least $5.4 million extra a month.

Don't forget the news every night where there are stories about:

(1) journalists getting a sneak-peek at the new hotels
(2) and much more subtle... concerns about the lack of full length platform screen doors at Pennys Bay & Sunny Bay stations. Like thats not on purpose - imagine all the free publicity they'll get when some kid accidentally loses an arm when a train goes flying past out there!

Might even be ironic if he was holding some Mickey souveniers in that hand.

cerberus is an unknown quantity at this point.
disney makes me sick sometimes. it's sad to see one of the most impressive cities in the world, a marvel built from scratch by people of every persuasion, reduced to a tourist attraction and mere souvenirish bauble.

I noticed a couple more references on ATV / Pearl news over the weekend. Nothing new: just re-hashing old stories about when it opens and that people can already ride the Mickey train blah blah blah.

Really... how is this news? Shows what a sorry state HK is in when even the local news channels are pandering to the corporate interests of a fluffy mouse rather than their 'learned' viewers.

End rant.
