Question Purchasing a money order or bank check

I went to 4 banks today, trying to buy a bank money order or cashier's check or bank draft.
All of the banks said that you have to have an account for that service.
Years ago, HSBC did it without me having an account with them.
So I guess things have changed.

Does anybody know if there's a place in HK to buy these?

By the way, I want to buy these in U.S. dollars.

Thanks for any feedback!!

Thank the Americans for some of these changes.

Do you know someone who has a local bank account who will take the money from you and get you a check?

Do you have an American Express card? Chances are they'll be able to help you. ( Contact them here )

Same goes if you have an account with any of the larger global banks like Citi etc.

Uggh, i've had nothing but problems so far here with the banks. I'm sure that most of this is due to my ignorance of the way things work here, and my negligence to research it before i moved here, but hell, we are all allowed to complain once and a while no?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Right, I'll have a look at AmEx.
I didn't even think of that. I've got a card. Not gold though

I'm sure that'll do the trick.

And why do we have the Americans to thank. All the banks I went
to were non-U.S.

I'm from Los Angeles, and nothing is more easy than back home.
You can simply go to any 7/11, and buy an American Express
Money Order. So convenient.

I'd like to know who I have to thank for the following:
American citizens now, to get a Chinese visa, have to pay thru
the roof. And to top it off, if you get a 6 mo.
or 1 year multiple entry, you have to leave China once every
30 days.
I asked the travel agent why, and they said that China is angry
with the U.S. because they fingerprint all foreigners now.
Well, that's got nothing to do with China, but with 9/11.

Go figure.

I think they just need to sit down and have a beer and let
the dust settle.

Sure, complain away!!
I like to hear what people are p/o'ed at.

And if we didn't have any problems, where would the
adventure be??

Some days I have so many things go wrong, that I just
start laughing and go with it. And see what else will go
wrong. lol

BTW, on another note, if ya don't already know it,
go to:
and you can watch the Shuttle & Space Station live, it's
pretty cool...and I'm so happy that they were able to get those
spacers out so easily yesterday!!

All US dollar checks are cleared through the clearing systems in New York.

By the way, these laws just made it easier for the banks to be arseholes... but there is a major problem post 9/11 that they have to deal with.

We frequently get large checks from the US and have to jump through hoops to get them cleared. GBP / Euro checks are much less of a hassle.
