Moving to Shenzhen from India - Help needed

Hi Folks,

Me from India and got an job to work in Shenzhen with a company as Manager. Since, I never been to China or Shenzhen, I appreciate if you could help me on finding the following information. My family consists of myself, wife, and two kids (10 and 7 years old). We are vegetarians (dont eat meat, fish, etc).

1. Cost of living in Shenzhen (for accomodation of two bedroom apartment, gas, electricity, food, transport, english medium school).
2. What is the best place to live in Shenzhen
3. Are there english medium Schools available for my kids
4. What should be a decent salary, where a person can save around 1000 US $ equivalent).

So many questions, but I can only look at the forum for help.

Raman

Hello Raman,

I am also moving to Shenzhen from India next month. May be we can share our information regarding relocation and finding accomodation in Shezhen.

Like you, I am also vegetarian and therefore interested in knowing if there are any good vegetarian restaurant in Shenzhen. Also, did you able to find out the cost of living in Shenzhen?

I am sure you will share your valuable information on the subject with me.

Cheers,
aiseduk

Best Wishes,
Shenzhen

don't know which district of SZ do you work

but for living i would suggest Futan(福田), where the environment is good and near-business-area & shopping mall.

The living is not expensive
public transport from RMB 2.00-6.00
a can of cola RMB $2.00-4.00
a set lunch in a normal restaurant RMB $12-25

The rent for a better apartment @ approx 80-110 sq metre should be about 5500-8500

veg* restuarants/food in Shenzhen

There are planty of grocery stores in shenzhen to make our own veg food. There's an Indian store in Lohou. As for veg* restuarants, there are several because there are buddhists in Shenzhen. Check out happycow.net and click on restuarant guide. There are several in Shenzhen. (There's quite a few veg*s in Shekou too...)

As for anyone coming from another country, bring any spices and non-oerishable food you think you'll have trouble finding. t will make the transistion much easier.

Heads up for all the vegetarians heading for Shenzhen!!

When you tell many Chinese you are vegetarian they process it as you don't eat meat (beef and lamb) but that you do eat seafood, chicken and pork. They also don’t recognize bacon and ham as being part of the pig.

Also, note that even when vegetarian dish have been ordered in a restaurant that the likelihood that the vegetarian dished are stir fired in animal fat is high. An exception are Urghuirs restaurants although they serve meat dishes cook using vegetable oil.

I suggest if you are going to eat outside with colleagues and clients that you stick to Buddhist or Urghuirs (XinJiang) restaurants.
