Cool HK 'Cyber-tourism'

Hi all,
I'm a South African, planning on diving into HK for a few days, in
a couple of month or so, for the shopping!! (computer goodies!

This is an odd angle of approach, but as I'm a complete computer
geek - and locally in SA, we have limited and expensive bandwidth
(my monthly internet costs = 60% of my rent-costs, and 'high
speeds' = around 15 -30KB)

So point being, I'm looking for ways of - as well as exploring the
'realworld' of HK - guzzling up as many gigabytes of data off the net,
as possible, to bring back with me, when my trip is done, to enjoy
as well.

Any forumites know of places that might cater to this kind of
admittedly quirky and totally geeky form of 'cyber-tourism'?

Local data access is so slow and expensive, that to me its a
very worthwhile moneysaver, to pay for the taking over of a PC
somewhere, at a sympathetic net cafe for instance - and filling
up a few hard-drives over some days, to then buy them, wrap
them in bubble plastic and bring back to my scarily slow netspeed
country.

(In SA, we have only ONE telecommunication company, and they
control the internet and prices here - 'capping' bandwidth usage to
just 3 gigs a month, making the internet an incredibly expensive
luxury item. So I'm looking at shopping for HK netspeed during my
visit, as well as for the usual pc bits and pieces

Any geeks or net cafe owners on forum that can offer suggestions
for a HK bound travelling geek?

Jeez .. so you essentially want to suck up someone elses bandwidth with your spiders?

Sounds bizzare ... I know of good reasons why people want to shake and stir retrived content.. but yours is probably the most bizzare.

"quirky". "geeky", and, most likely illegal. You should be aware that a number of people have been prosecuted in HK recently for use of file-sharing programmes to share copyrighted material. If what you are looking for is stolen software then there are shops here that will sell you that on CD or hard drive to save you the effort of downloading it. It probably wouldn't cost much more than a net cafe rental, and the penalty is the same if caught - up to two years in jail.

Thanks for the replies - let me clear up some possible misunderstandings
First off, re 'soaking up someone elses bandwidth' - nope, I'm not
suggesting that at all - I'm quite happy to be paying for whatever
bandwidth I use up. The thing is, the bandwidth I might use up
COSTS LESS to you there, than it does to me here.

You dont perhaps understand - in SA - we're forced to pay a truly
exorbitant amount for bandwidth - AND that bandwidth is severely
limited. I spend $1,363.87 HK dollars (1200 rand local currency)
a month, for just 3 gigs of data.

That's for JUST 3 gigs in total, to be spread over 30 days.
(And a further $1,363 HK dollars for every extra 3 gigs thereafter.
Look at your own ISP's to see your costs and compare.)

Our monthly cost in SA for net, will probably purchase anywhere
from 100 - 500 times more bandwidth, in any other country, such
as the US, the UK, or HK.

Next off - I'm not coming from the 'warez kiddie' perspective or
motivation at all - in terms of data content - I actually collect old
radio shows from the 1920's and onwards - look up 'OTR' (Old Time
Radio) You'll see there's a wide and well established online
community of collectors, who enjoy listening to and sharing old
radio shows from 70 or so years back..
Given the monopoly in place in SA, and the insane artificial costs
of bandwidth here - it makes perfect sense for me to spend
roughly the same amount of money I spend here, there - to get
a VAST quantity of what I'm into, and to bring it back to SA for
my pleasure..

So understand, I'm not into pirated games/apps/music etc, I am a
collector of old audio material. And the slow local speeds,
combined with excessive costs far beyond what almost any other
country is paying for the same quantities of data - means its a
viable and valid alternative. (and 'quirky' etc etc)

What I can download at speed in four days, will take me months to
download locally, and cost me literally thousands of dollars at local
pricing for bandwidth, to obtain.

So no one's getting ripped off, no one's bandwidth is being 'stolen',
there's no money being made, no material is even being talked about
that's of value to anyone outside of fans of vintage radio stuff.

And if I was after the latest 'warez', that's very easily bought (or
downloaded) right here, for free. That's simply not my area of
interest at all.

If you're not in a country that's operating under a single telecom
monopoly, that's determined to squeeze huge amounts of money
from net users - for quantities of data that you folks probably take
for granted, then you may find this all a little difficult to comprehend.

I hope this clears up some of the possible misunderstandings. I'm not
suggesting anything illegal at all - just trying to find a good
workaround to my own county's stupid internet costs - and
gathering data, while having an HK shopping frenzy at the same
time

I've never tried a cybercafé - not sure if this applies here - but if you stay in one of the more modern hotels then they provide unlimited free 'net access. I used them to upload hundreds of MB's of photos/videos to my server in case I lost my camera/memory card on my travels. The two hotels I used were the Kowloon (Wifi and LAN) and the Metropark (LAN) and neither complained. You will need a laptop or a PocketPC or something similar though... they only provide the connection!

I doubt that the rented computers will have cd writers or zip drives but you may be able to plug in a usb flash stick.

Last time I was there the Kowloon Hotel had free WiFi, Metropark Hotel had free broadband via an ethernet cable... I created a couple of pages with the info on wikipedia last year but they deleted it a few weeks ago saying the info was too commercial. Sorry, can't remember other locations although I did look through lots of reviews to narrow it down to those two at the time.

Alternatively, take your laptop and externals to Starbucks or PCC and get a WiFi day pass. You can leech as much as you want until your battery dies...they won't let you plug anything in though.
