Smile internet cafes? and broadband

hi, we have just arrived in HK and haven't set up internet at home yet so i am still trying to log in around the place ...

am a bit sick of paying for cr@p coffees to use the net for 15mins and was wondering if anyone knows of a proper internet place in central or midlevels? there is one in central (itfans?) recommended by lonelyplanet but it seems to have closed down!?!

would appreciate any help!

oh and if anyone can recommend a good braodband provider that doesnt try to tie you into a long term contract, any advice on that would be great too

You can try the Central Library opposite Victoria Park in Causeway Bay - many computers and all free!

There are many Internet cafes around but most of them are very local and for online gaming rather than just Internet. Some of them provide lunch and dinner at cheap prices. Anyway, they are hardly seen by a westerner since most of them are above street level and their ADs that are seen on streets are usually in Chinese.

If you don't want to pay then you will have to travel

I have always called it the SME centre at the Convention Centre, but most people could not find it so finally I took the trouble to find out what the bloody place is actually called

http://infocentre.tdctrade.com/

the place you want to be is 'Electronics Data Centre'

http://infocentre.tdctrade.com/facilities/ele_data.htm

sounds scary but isnt AND it has internet. Have an Octopus card handy to use printer .

You will never find it on your own so grab a TDC rep on entering the Convention Centre.

Send a message via MSN to kristof
Wanchai

It's a little bit ghetto, but if you happen to take the mtr at Wanchai station you can use the internet for free, not sure where the computers are, somewhere in the paying area. Can be handy to check and reply emails quickly.

I only remember "Pacific Coffee" has free internet

and if you are already "Netvigator" subscriber, you get 30minutes free (per month) of "wireless connection" with your Notebook in any Starbuck Coffee, and then it will be $10 dollar per 30minutes (I think)

How can you avail of the free 30 minutes from Netvigator?

Try getting an unlimited WIFI account from Y5ZONE (www.y5zone.net). They have a decent coverage but cannot be compared to Netvigator though.

Longbeard: Great find!! Covers some of the places where I like to have "business meetings"

Might be time to invest in a notebook I can actually carry without breaking my back.
