Fortress (or Broadway) is the safest choice, for cheaper options there is a large secondhand market.

Mobile Phones: Most of the shops have decent products and good prices. You're not likely to get a deep discount if you're looking for Hong Kong a warranty. If you're willing to take a risk, ask for a phone with a shop warranty.

I've bought phones from Mongkok, Ap Liu Street, Central shops without much problem. At the end of the day, make sure there are several others buying from the same shop and you'll be ok... don't be the only idiot who has walked in.

Digital Cameras: Again, have bought from shops in Sheung Wan, Stanley Street and even Chungking mansions without a problem. If you know what you're looking for and know exactly how what a good price is then take the risk.

Cool

Shop warranty is usually fine. Broadway and Fortress often sell at full price, and I've seen Citicall selling at higher than full retail price! Shops with no prices are usually looking to rip you off when they think you are a wealthy (or ignorant) foreigner, but this doesn't mean you can get a good price by taking a local in with you.

As a benchmark, Samsung D500 $2660 (retail about $3880), and Casio EX-Z750 $2690 (retail about $3980 I believe). Not to say to buy them (the D600 is out soon) but using known product pricing as a benchmark for how reasonable their prices are is handy (just ask them how much these products are and you might get some idea of their overall pricing and ability to source cheap stuff). This pricing for example is product imported from China and have 1 year shop warranty (although some brands like Casio have a global tourist warranty anyway).

As a general rule I'd aim for 30% off full retail (ie. 30% off Fortress price).

sefo: i think that refers to what is known as 'water goods'. i bought a 'water goods' phone in Tuen Mun, and it has shop warranty only. these are phones meant for the mainland market that are sold on the 'grey market' here....not really illegal but not 100% legal either. when we found out (my gf is chinese), we had a real battle returning it, eventually exchanging it for a more expensive legitimate phone....so buyer beware when dealing with grey market or 'water goods'

maybe a local can shed more light on this practice of selling 'water goods'?
