There are no real "full on expat communities" in HK - pretty much everywhere will have more locals than expats, although in some areas (such as right up on The Peak) it may not seem that way sometimes.
You probably want to be somewhere near the escalator, depending on where exactly your office will be. Do you really want to walk 30 minutes at 30 degrees in 90% humidity?
In the mid-levels, e.g. Robinson Road, Caine Road a decent 1000-1400 sq.ft apartment will cost you anything from HK$20K to HK$40K depending on the development. Obviously you can find smalller and cheaper (e.g. 400sq.ft studios from, say HK$8K up). One problem is that it is hard to find good-sized 1- or 2- bedroom apartments - most tend to have lost of small rooms. Use

http://www.ypmap.com to locate addresses.
I would recommend getting your company to pay for a hotel or serviced apartment for a few weeks while you get a feel for the different areas and types of property available.
For clothes I would say stock up before you come, particualrly if you are not skinny. Electronics can wait - you can get everything here, often sooner than elsewhere, so why bother shipping it. Won't your company provide the laptop?
