One of the University's graduates, Tung Che Hwa, who gained a B Eng (Hons) degree in Marine Engineering in 1960, has been elected as the new Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong and will take office on 1 July 1997 when the territory is reunited with mainland China.

Mr Tung was the founding president of the University of Liverpool Graduate Association in Hong Kong, from its inauguration in 1988 until 1993, when he became a member of the Executive Council in Hong Kong. The Graduate Association is just one of the many important links which the University has with both Hong Kong and China, and the Vice-Chancellor recently met with Mr Tung in Hong Kong to discuss how these links might be developed further to the mutual advantage of Hong Kong, China and the University of Liverpool.
