Married to HK Girl

Hi everybody,

Just a quick question. I am married to a HK girl who is a HK citizen (born in HK, permanent ID card, lived most part of her life in HK, etc). Currently both of us are living and working in the UK. My question: if we were to immigrate to HK, am I allow to work in HK?

From what I gathered, I will be granted a dependant visa, and then I need to apply for an ID card. After that I should be able to find work as per any normal HK citizen. The dependant visa will need to be renewed on an annual basis. After 7 years, I can apply for ROA and permanent ID card, after which I can apply for HKSAR passport.

Is that right?

Note: My nationality is Malaysian and I hold a Malaysian passport. We got married in HK.

Many thanks.

Voon

vsiang,

Most of what you have written is correct. You will need to apply for a dependants visa after which you can apply for an ID card. You will be able to work being married to a HK permanent resident.

After 7 years you can apply for a permanent ID card but this will not automatically allow you to apply for a HKSAR passport. The procedure for gaining an HK passport is very long and strict and you may find you can never qualify to gain one.

If you are of Chinese descend then there is a chance u MAY get a HKSAR passpaort but u will have to renounce your Malaysian citizenship before they grant you China citizenship....it takes very long.....

[quote=jaykay]vsiang,

You mean continous living in HK for 7 years? What if I live outside of HK example, live in USA for a year or 2 that makes it a total of 5 years living in HK but of course still married to a HK permanent resident. what's the verdict on this situation.

Usually the verdict should be.... Your previous stay of 5 yrs doesnt count but you can still apply for dependant visa and start from zero...

Thanks for all the reply. I feel a lot better now :-)

On the HKSAR passport issue, I am of Chinese descend, and I speak/write both Cantonese and Mandarin. But I don't wanna lose my Malaysian passport as we might want to retire to Malaysia one day.

By just having ROA, what are the things I am losing compared to having a HKSAR passport?

Thanks.

I have a question too.
If I get married to a hk girl in hk.
Will I get hk passport?
will I be like hk resident?
I get workpermit?

I am swedish resident, I have swedish passport, I can hold 2 different passports.

Is it easier for me to get hk passport?
