Following a partner to HK

Apologies for any naivete - but if it's any consolation, I have searched most of the FAQ's that I've come across so far.

My question is this: My partner (unmarried) is due to come to HK end of July and I want to know my chances of being able to secure employment in HK myself. I have about 7 years' management experience in tourism and Food and Beverage Industries, degree in law, no madarin or chinese, but fluent french and some spanish (fat lot of good). So, just how easy do you think I would be able to find gainful employment? Money is not really an option although I guess a minimum 10,000 HKD would be enough, but a job that would keep me interested would be better.

TIA

MM,

I think with your F&B experience you should be able to find a job as a manager in one of the many bars and restaurants in HK.

I also came over with my partner and although it took 7 months to find a job, I found one!!

Perhaps you could start sending out your CV now and see what is around. Or try some employment agencies - try to get a flavour of the job market.

You may wish to think about teaching English / French while looking for a proper job

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
So are you saying Sazzy, that teaching isn't considered a 'PROPER' job?

Same.

I'm also planning to follow my partner who has HKID and a job to go to. My question is whether it is worth trying to get a dependents visa (which I hear is difficult when not married), or to just enter as a visitor and then look for work? Does it make any difference which way when it comes to changing to a work visa?

I've started my TEFL, just in case!!

Many thanks for any help.

Hi-
Keep in mind that the immigration department during the past 2 years has been making obtaining employment visa's difficult.

If you are planning on looking for employment and have the employer sponsor the visa I highly recommend that you bring the orginal or notarized copies of all supporting documents (diplomas, certifications, etc.) of your profession and even previous employers testimonies that you actually held the position - to be given to immigration.

Best of Luck...
