Phone Cards

I'm visiting Hong Kong for a couple of months but need to call Canada a lot. So far I've been ripped off pretty badly by shady phone cards (Hello Phonecard gave me half an hour for $50!).

I'm calling from a landline, does anyone know any phone cards that are good?

Yes, but I'm not allowed to mention them here unfortunately. You should be able to get 130-150 minutes for $50, although with most phinecards you get "per call" surcharges, so you get more minutes if you make a small number of long calls than a lot of short calls.

I always use Tawag Na (filipino card). Really cheap. can get about 300 minutes for $50. Dont know where you are but I buy mine from a fruit stand in Tin Hau on Electric rd near the over pass or go deep inside Chung King mansion , bottom floor and ask all the stalls. I haggled one guy down to $40 for the same card.

I'm not sure how you managed to do that: Tawag Na rates to Canada are 38.4 HK cents per minute. Some of the other cards from the same company have slightly better rates:

At a quick look, Unity at 30.1 HK cents per minute and no connection charge seems best.

Wow, 300 minutes for HK$50 is a steal.

I used to get around 120 minutes for HK$50 (discounted to around HK$42) from the eclink cards sold at Chungking Mansions.

I call the East Coast of Canada using the Call and save calling cards from 7-elven and I get good time from them. A hundred dollar card will give me over 300 minutes.. This is what me and all the other canadian girls use and we all find that these cards are the best value for the dollar!

Try these guys ..

INX

You can get yourself a canadian number and people can call it or you can call locally using that number. US$ 7.95/month if they have a point of presence in your most called city.

You'd need to use your PC for this.

Do you think you can get a private landline?

Local telephone companies offer HK$0.38/min to Canada, US & UK... Probably a better deal if you call "a lot"...

Thanks guys! I'm going to stick with the cards, I'm only here for another month and it's not worth it to get a landline.

I'm not sure what happened with the card, with the other one I bought it got me 2 hours for$50, which still seems like a lot. MAybe I got a freak card that was already used... from 7-11 no less.

I've been buying them in the residential areas of kowloon, where my parents' friends live, but I guess i'll go more downtown to get cards from now on, thanks again!!
