the really popular gym called california which is located in central, causeway bay and a lot of other places...for student its HK$298 a month..and i think HK$498 a month for adults...you have to sign a contract for a year..but you can go 3 times a week for adults and anytime you like for student... they are more trustworthy and all the towels, lockers, steamrooms, personal trainer etc, are all included..just go right in and ask for a tour

some gyms will make you sign the contract and then tell you that you have pay for towels lockers.....so remember to ask first

Hmmm I go to California, but got a better deal than that - $350 - and can go any time I like, they certainly do not restrict the number of times we can go a week. It took a while to bargain the price and I was signing up with another person which may have brought the price down. It's good though, bit busy during peak times but I can use any of the gyms (eg Causeway Bay, WanChai etc) and the classes are great. It's nice and quiet in the mornings usually.

Hey Fuddie, you're right. I was a membership of California since 2004. Quite good.

a brief rundown from what i've learned:
pure fitness is nicey nicey for the aesthetically sensitive worker-outer. they have some special offers for hsbc card holders i believe, but over all they are priced on the high side. also beware that they offer a mess of options, with some that allow use of their yoga studio and some that don't, etc. still, its a very pretty place.

california fitness is your typical american gym with some hardselling marketers but once you get past that, its a good gym with good equipment, etc and so long as you negotiate wisely with them, probably the best deal among the big players

seasons fitness is another nice one and the only one with a pool. price wise it is more expensive than california but they do have some good corporate discounts

Modern Beauty

I joined Modern Beauty in Admiralty for their 30 day discounted trial. I hate it there. No one is friendly, they are almost borderline rude. No one speaks engligh either, so if you have any questions, forget it.

I only joined becuase one of my Chinese friends goes there. She had a discounted coupon for 1 month and wanted me to try. When we got there to sign up they didn't want to give me the discount becuase they said it was for Hong Kong passport holders only (it was a different price for foreigners), although the coupon didn't say that. After she yelled at them (she speaks Cantonese) they finally gave me the discounted price.

They are only open from 10-9 during the week, I have some trouble getting there between those times and not feeling rushed.

I am joining California Fitness next...
