I will be moving to HK this december, one of the things i am worried about as much as actually finding a job is my surfing addiction...If i dont get to go at least 1 time a week i can get pretty cranky.
Does anyone here know how the surfing is around Hong Kong? Locals? Beaches? That kind of stuff? Also I shape boards so how difficult would it be to get supplies around there?
Any and all info would be great. Thanks

There's a surfing hardcore here. Big Wave bay is really popular and depending on the weather you can get some decent waves. You can hire boards there too.

If you want wetsuits, rashers etc there's lots of surfing shops about - Rip Curl and Quicksilver in causeway bay.

Shouldn't be a problem to keep your addiction under control.

Board hiring isn't going to be a problem i have 3 that i am going to take with me when i move there this dec. Hopefully they wont get to beat up on the airplane ride there.
Would you know if there are any local shapers in HK? How are the locals? Are there any expats around that surf there?
Just trying to test the waters before i go there. Thanks again!!

There will be some shapers, don't know of any though sorry. Lots of the young locals surf and so do expats, cos Big wave bay is THE beach to go surfing. But go into any of the surf shops when you get here and ask - they're always really helpful.

You won't have any problems surfing here.

Surfing condition is not great in Hong Kong but there are few beaches where you can go in the winter season. When northeast wind blows, you can go to Big Wave Bay, south part of the Hong Kong Island with some waves you can ride. Most locals go there because it is convenient; there are also a lot of bodyboarders around. If you like hiking, Tai Long Wan at Sai Kung will be another option for you, look at the map and you see it. The wave condition there is usually much better than Big Wave Bay on the Island. No traffic can reach this

You may need a back up plan, like wakeboarding etc, for when there are no waves.

Thanks for all the help. I found a msn site called sixrounds, it seems to have a lot of info. From what i gather HK is just like Japan for surfing. Anything over 5 feet and the surf to be cool crowd dissapears. But anything under and its out of control with the crowds. You wouldn't happen to know how difficult it is to find this place?
Well thanks for all the help. One thing less for me to worry about. Now i just have to worry about, work, house,visa,getting married, HK ID card...has anyone had a nervous breakdown from just thinking of moving there? It's exciting but...nerve wracking at the same time.

Just came back from hossegor, and several other plages around the cote de basque...was wondering if there are any waves in HK during the mid-may, and what the water temp is during that time? Hey! I can't believe you surf Hossegor, I spent all summer surfing in Lacanau. Here the waves are not as good but we do get some good conditions sometimes, go to http://www.surf-forecast.com/breaks/BigWaveBay.shtml for forecasts
