Can Brits apply for HKID?

I heard something a while back that Immigration were asking Brits to apply for a HKID if they were planning on abusing their 6 months in HK.

Apparently, you still cant work with it, but it makes life easier when you get stopped by the police...

anyway, i've been looking for information on this and cant find any. I'm wanting a pay monthly sim card as i've only been notified that with what i'm paying per month on prepay, i could actually have about 3 pay monthly sim's with almost 5000 minutes...

I will be applying for a work visa soon, but i'm not sure how long that would take and wouldnt mind getting a few balls rolling in the mean time.

People Abusing Visa policies being rewarded with being easier to deal with police?

Doesn't make much sense...

i thought it made a little sense, i mean if i can stay for 6 months and intend to, why not make my life a little easier?

i was homeless for almost a month when i got here, because i needed an ID to get a flat.

On top of that, the 2 times i've been stopped by the police for looking good i've had to present my passport, which i'd rather leave at home in case i lost it

Did you mean to say 'abuse'? Did you mean just to use for the full 6 months? I could see some logic for the latter. For the former I'd love to hear the conversation at immigration.

"Dear officer I plan to abuse my visa by working or doing something else illegal."

"That's ok son, have an ID card to make it easier then."

Think not.

I doubt they will grant you a HKID without you having a work visa...and you can't just throw all the applications at them and have them sorted as you wish...there is a procedure to follow

You do realise that Employment Visas need to be sponsored by a specific employer and tie you to that specific job? From what I've read here I feel you might have trouble finding an employer...

Mister36,

I'm from the UK & have never heard of this. When you say abusing their 6 months visa, do you mean working illegally??

I can't work at the moment as I have no sponsorship & wouldn't risk taking a job illegally (that is, if any employer would risk the fines also!!).

Deportation from any country is not pleasant.........

Caraexpat,

If I read your previous posts correctly, you're risking residing here illegally whilst holding a visitor visa, so you might as well get hanged for a sheep as for a lamb surely?

Its a lot harder for immigration to prove i am not just "visiting".....I have no tie to the address that I stay at when I'm here. Also, I am in & out of the country all the time.
