Red face Dumb as a brick

I've been reading reading reading the posts and have only suceeded in answering my question both ways. Dependent visa, able to work or no? HK fiance financially stable... me a US citizen.

Yeah, I know I'm not too bright for having to ask after all the reading.

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
Dependants can't work (as of last year) without a work visa or sponsorship. It doesn't matter if your fiance is from HK and stable or not. You can live here fine, but not work without the visa/sponsorship. Hope that helps...and it's not a dumb qustion as it's still confusing a lot of people!

MrE,

Baron's answer is only partially correct, and probably doesn't apply to you.

It depends on what grounds you have a Dependent Visa, meaning what is the status of the person you are dependent on?

If the person you are dependent on is a Permanent Resident of HK then as their dependent you do have the right to work without restriction. If I understand correctly this will be your situation when you are married to a HK citizen.

However, if the person you are dependent on is in HK on the basis of an Employment Visa (or other non-permanent status, such as student) then you Dependent Visa does NOT give you the right to work. In this case you would need to get an Employment Visa in your own right and have to pass the same tests as anyone else on an employment visa.

(The exception to the above is that Dependents on non-permanent residents whose Dependent Visas were first issued before July 2003, when the rules were changed, do still have the right to work.)

Please also note that in order to qualify for a dependant visa you must be married to a hong Kong resident. as a fiance you don't qualify.

Elle,

There have been cases recently where they have provided visas to long term partners on the condition that they will not seek employment under any circumstances.
