In order to get a work visa, you need a letter/sponsorship from your prospective employer. Your first work visa is for a year and then you have to apply for an extension.

Do people usually get the extension when they apply for it? I have a two-year contract with a company, and a one year visa.

My plan is to settle here permanently - are my chances good for that if I stay with the company I'm with?

Yes, they will give you an extension, but you may have to be asked to produce a letter from your employer that you are still employed. Just a formality.

Your chances to remain in HK permanently are excellent. Just stay with your company.

Should be no problem even if you change companies assuming the new one is happy to take over the sponsorship of your Employment Visa. The duration of the extensions varies a bit for reasons that I have never fully understood: some people say 1-2-2-3 (and during the last of those you can start applying for permanent residence after you have been here 7 years).

For some reason mine has been 1-2-2-1-3, but during the second 1 I changed jobs and, because there was more than 6 months remaining on my Employment Visa after my application for sponsorship by my new employer was submitted, I simply got a letter from Immigration approving the transfer about 3 weeks after the application was submitted.

No - only 2 years old at the time. But anyway, I'm now good for 3 more years with plenty of time for a PR application.
