Work Visa vs. HKID

Hi, does anyone know whether there is a difference (or any drawbacks) of opening a bank account, getting a mobile phone account, etc...on a working visa vs. on a HK permanent ID? Does having a work visa generally present more paperwork or necessary documentation?

I'll be on a work visa, but am also in the process of applying for my HKID card. Although once I arrive, it will still be a few weeks before my ID card will be issued and I would like to get the bank account, mobile phone and other such personal effects taken care of as soon as I arrive.

Any insights on this? Thank You.

Some of the banks will require a permanent ID to approve some forms of unsecured credit (like credit cards with high limits) and mortgages etc.

Once you apply for your ID card, you get a piece of paper on acceptance of your application. This serves as a temporary ID card and is good enough to apply for various services.

Do keep in mind, HSBC and some of the banks will allow you to open accounts (savings.. not credit) with just your passport and perhaps an employers letter stating your basic employment terms.

On a side note .. you get a "permanent ID card" ( unconditional / right of abode ) after staying in HK for seven years. I assume you mean the plastic card handed out after a few weeks of application?

Red face

I was born in HK, so am applying for right of abode based on that status.

Would I have any problems getting a mobile phone with a passport and work visa then? Or am I better off trying to wait until I at least get my temporary ID "paper?"
