I am new to Hong Kong. I need to fix a few things in my apartment. Is there a Home Depot or Walmart or Target type of store in Hong Kong which sells home upgrade/repair materials - paint, cements, tiles, electric tools etc.

Is there a FAQ - living in Hong Kong for newbies ?

I checked out a few home electric appliances stores recently e.g. Fortress. Why things here a more more expensive than in US ? In US, I can get a rice cooker for $9.99 USD but over here in Hong Kong the cheaper than I have seen so far is more than $50 USD. Where should I go to buy things like TVs, DVD players, VCR, rice cooker, coffee maker, microwave oven, tooster, etc, etc. In US, I can get a DVD player for as low as $17 USD and a 19" TV for less than $99 USD. I am surprised that it costs that much more here in Hong Kong.

Look at the chinese shops in the sidestreets for bargains.

Oh yeah ... none of the US brand name supershops are here.

Fortress sells "proper" imports; good for guarantees, say, but does tend to be pricier than some places.
Yes, try Chinese stores, esp out of business areas of city (?)
Apliu Street maybe worth a look, for electronics: Ap Liu St, so too nearby streets, and the Golden Arcade which is also just outside Sham Shui Po MTR stn (tho this arcade mainly for computer stuff).

There is a Wal-mart Supercenter in Shenzhen. They carry home electronics and tools. There is also I Sam's Club which I have not been too.

I visited Shenzhen last November but still live in the US. I have no knowledge as to what it takes to get purchases across the border.

Where is the Walmart in Shenzhen ? Can I get there by train ?
