Red face HK no longer to be "Asia's World City"?!

Hong Kong looks for a new slogan to replace 'Asia's World City' : Asia World

Hmmm...I'm sure that we can come up with some good slogans, but will they be family-friendly?

Quote:
Hong Kong - Hong Kong's government is spending hundreds of thousands of US dollars looking for a new slogan to replace the current boast of "Asia's World City," a news report said Sunday. The former British colony's government has spent 160,000 US dollars hiring multi-national communications company Fleishmann- Hillard to supervise the task, the Sunday Morning Post reported.

Another 64,000 US dollars is being spent setting up a website for people to offer their ideas on a new slogan and image for the city of 6.9 million people.

Hundreds of thousands are then expected to be spent once the process is complete promoting the new slogan, which will compete against regional slogans such as Malaysia Truly Asia.

The Hong Kong government spent 1.1 million US dollars in 2001 relaunching itself as Asia's World City with a dragon logo, a controversial exercise criticized by many as a waste of money.

The "Asia's World City" slogan has since been repeatedly used to bash Hong Kong when it fails to live up to its image as an international and cosmopolitan city.

64 grand for a website for ordinary shmucks to do the brainstorming for you and then bill the customer 160 grand for picking the best answer.

Gotta get on that gravy train!

I forget which agency they used the last time. I sincerely home that this time around the slogan comes with a minimum 10 year guarantee.

I just came from Shanghai last week. Compared with a couple of months ago, there's the new airport Pudong terminal (and it is Nice!) + they more or less seem finished with the Shanghai World Center (the new tallest building in Shanghai). Compare to 4years ago when i lived there, they simply transformed / build Pudong. They are hauling ass, that's for sure. Although I prefer Hong Kong by far, they must feel a bit threatened by Shanghai's speed.

rayw is on a distinguished road
Look at that old 'Asia's World City' ad by the gov't on buses and trams, having one white face and several other Hong Kong Chinese faces, but no faces of other ethnicities that contribute to the Hong Kong society...That's one true version of Hong Kong 'World City' mindset...
