help with initial budget for living in HK

Hi there,

I am a designer from London UK. I am looking into applying for a grant from the British Council for a business placement with a company in HK for up to 3 months only. The maximum grant the scheme is offering is £15, 500.

I need a bit of help putting together a budget for this can any one out there provide any advice:

•Personal development grant (you may take your salary as a guide line if you are using this to substitute income):

•Insurance (e.g. for travel):

•Travel (e.g. costs to get to placement, trip back to UK if required): - return airfare, travel expenses on HK public transport for 3 months

•Accommodation (e.g. a rough estimation based on current rates what sort of accomodation and where would I be able to afford on this grant?

•Consumables: food!

•Visa: What type of visa would I need for a international placememt - and the rough cost?

•Other expenses: medical?

Total in HK$
Total in £

What would people suggest?
Best
Ria

Hello again-
I have found most of the answers - apart from on

Accommodation
Accommodation wise I am looking for a hostel or studio 1 bedroom apartment for 3 months, I guess with internet connection. Is it best to look into serviced apartments as it is for a 3 month period?
would 6-9K HK$ cover this?

Visa-
I am not sure a visitor visa is suitable- but I would be effectively doing work experience with a company in HK

Visa-
If you get the grant the the BC will take care of such a thing - or be able to assist you with it the necessary paperwork. Most likely a training visa some sort especially if funded by BC

Insurance -
Travel insurance as it will cover loss and damage to your belongings as well as medical insurance. Call a local travel agent or insurance provider to give you a quote from where you are right now.

Travel -
to and from UK can be done within HK10,000 - you can also buy an open ended tix with restrictions at a cheaper rate - check with travel agent
Local transport is dictated by where you live and your social life and how you travel. I would over estimate in this area a bit to be safe.

Accommodation - (w/ internet cnx)
for each month in HK allow HK$8-HK$11K - you maybe able to find a flat share situation for the time you are here for a better price.

Consumables -
Depends on you taste - local or international or mix - or will you have a kitchen for cooking - this can nbe as little as HK3000 to HK8000 or more. Depends on your taste

For the apartment, I dont think you'll be able to get a serviced unit in your budget. For a regular apartment rental, make sure you have enough cash for up to a 2 months deposit, 1 month rent, and up to 1/2 month for the agent fee.

Utilities will require another $1400 deposit (water/electricity)
