Help.. Car sales conmen!!! Part 2

I am sure some of you are as interested as I am in the well being of tonyaki and his mysterious imported car. He hasnt reveal what car he was trying to buy. It could be a vintage Lada or a brand new Tesla. (If he did get a Tesla, I hope he doesn't sue the developer for not putting in electrical outlets in the garage) So, how is he? Why isnt he letting us know what he is up to?

I wonder if he actually took the advice here to get out of the deal and use the AA to help him by getting the vehicle rejected. He never responded other than to say he had a chance to get a mechanic to check it when it is equally and possibly more important to get a structural damage clearance check!!!

He probably was forced in the end to get Own Damage (collision) coverage (he said they wanted Comprehensive but that is usually fire and theft and not at fault vehicle crash coverage) If the car was financed and worth big bucks the finance company will want to have the collateral protected.

Or he is out enjoying his new car and has no time to post an update.

Just checked kwiksure, Geoexpat's insurer, and note that comprehensive likely covers own damage (collision).

Our friend said he needed Comp coverage from the start and this includes own damage as I read it so I am using Canadian insurance terms not HK local as above.

My error.

Kwiksure is neither Geoexpat's insurer (they are an advertiser) nor an insurance company in itself. Where did you look to deduce that comprehensive likely covers own damage.

Indeed Lammarite, is right.

Kwiksure are Insurance brokers, albeit, a popular one among expats, run by expats, and often staffed by expats ( Aussies ) ....

Looking at my own vehicle insurance policy, which was organised via Kwiksure, noting that MSIG Insurance Hong Kong limited are who they typically use, out of the two Insurance companies willing to insure us foreign devils .

Its not the gweilo's, but the age of vehicles that Gweilo's typically insure...

My source, Anthony & Richard, from Kwiksure. For some reason in HK, if you drive an older than 7 year old car, magically you have an increased chance of a car accident !

The other funny thing is that if you have a PHD in anything, apparently the insurance companies think that makes you a better driver than say, someone that doesn't...

It's a weird use of data, to determine a drivers ability, risk assessment etc.

A short HK list of funny things about insurance in HK.
  • 1/. If you are a housewife, HK insurance companies will not insure your car, no matter that your policy is paid for in full, you are uninsurable in the eyes of HK insurance companies. You can only be insured on your HUSBANDS policy as he is the KING of the household, and he is infinitely smarter, because he has a job etc etc etc. ...I am dead set serious, that this is the actual mentality out there. World city ? Pigs arse !
  • 2/ If you are a member of the HK police force you are uninsurable, in the eyes of most of HK's insurance companies. The off duty cop ( starsky and hutch) who decides to get into a car chase situation with his own car, has happened a lot in the past..Or so I was told.

  • 3/ If you are an actor, performing artist etc, think ( Aaron Kwok and his write off Zonda F ), HK personalities like to crash their 6 million dollar cars on a regular basis, because a few did, now no more insurance policies for anybody in a similarly named profession..

hahahaaaaaa..... this is funny!! I haven't been here as frequently, after getting helpful advice, (and some not so helpful) as well as from other sources, I have been busy seeking other avenues for help.

I am pleased to tell you all that I have successfully worked out a cash deal with the dealer to keep things as simple as possible and to put a quick end to the whole affair which I now see as an unpleasant at the time, but funny experience. I think it is ultimately a fair price for the car but I am stuck with my old car which I do love and didn't want to hand over to those scum.

My first post named the dealer and place where I bot it, but this was understandably edited by the administrators.

If you are interested in the story, you can check out this weeks edition of Next Magazine which reveals all the details and for those who thought I was bitching, then sorry but don't worry, these kind of things will never happen to someone like you, and you will never have cause to seek help or advice in a forum for people living in a foreign country.

I have learnt several positives from the experience and it has brought me closer to my HK friends. I also have a better idea of how the HK media, consumer council and the police work in HK. If anybody looking for introductions to lawyers, HK police, journalists, fairly priced car insurance, reliable mechanics etc...., drop me a pm.
