Most bars usually pay a low salary as they know you will get tips. some bars pay eg. 8 -10K HKD per month , with tips it could be 13K per month, can you survive on this, of course you can, depends on your lifestyle. depending on your experience and what kind of bar it is, you might be able to get more basic salary. goodluck

I was under the impression it was nigh on impossible for foreigners to get work permits for jobs that can be done by the local working population. Having said that there are hundreds of filipino (possibly qualified residents though) and several western bar staff in both Wanchai (Joe Bananas/Delaneys) and LKF (Bulldogs).

when i worked at a pub in TST (granted, it was over a decade ago) the going rate was.... $35/hour (you got a free meal and 2 drinks after work). don't think you'd EVER be able to get a visa for it though, unless you were a "flair bartender" like in the movie COCKTAIL.

The western bar staff are often on some sort of working holiday visa, which is only available to certain passport holders (I think Aus, NZ, Ireland, but could be wrong). A proper work visa won't be granted for this kind of work.
