Aussie Expats in Hong Kong - want to start a club

Are there any Aussies out there that want to start a club??

I was thinking something along the lines of a club that has several committees focused on sporting activities, socialising, BBQ, appreciation of Aussie food, appreciation of Aussie beer / wine and anything else that comes to mind.

I know there's the HKCC, the HKFC and other type of sporting clubs but if you're not totally into sports (and don't have the money to join one of those pricey clubs) and all you're after is some socialising then there's not a club that's out there simply to encourage everyone to have a good time.

I'm looking for like minded entrepreunerials to help me brainstorm to get this project off the ground.
I'm a 30 year old Chinese Australian with a passion for food, wine/beer and sports. If you think you would like to get together to come up with an idea then let me know. I've been in Hong Kong for about 3 months now and I feel having a club like this will help new Aussie expats adjust to HK life e.t.c. Please post messsage me if interested.

G'day Jonesy11,

There has been a club of sorts for 5 decades, via the Australian Association of Hong Kong.

Australian Association of Hong Kong

And the reason why country clubs etc that own or lease a building for you to utilise as a member, is that space costs big $$$ in this town, which is always passed onto the end users.

Many of them are paying ridiculously low rents.

Development Bureau - Planning and Lands Branch - Publications and Press Releases

All a huge cover up from the good old colonial country club gin and tonic days.

Sounds like a good idea in theory. However, why don't you try and organise some more informal events and gatherings through here first? I'm sure there would be a number of Aussies (and perhaps even New Zealanders? :P) up for it. Not sure if people will generally have the time to try to set something new up formally from scratch.

I have heard of the Australian Association but haven't joined myself as I got the impression it was for an older crowd - families etc.

Austcham (Australian Chamber of Commerce) also exists and is fairly active; however, it is probably a bit more business oriented than social. Australian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong

Why limit it by focussing only on Australians? Wrapping up Aussie food and wine in interesting social and sporting events is cool. There's lots of scope for that in HK.

My wife and I wouldn't join a club that is just for Aussies, but we might join a club that showcases the best of Australian culture.

Okay maybe I was a little optimistic. I should start off with just organising social gatherings.

Everyone is welcome to put forth their ideas.

So would be people be keen to get together for dinner and drinks, perhaps share in some fine Australian wine e.tc

I think the BBQ idea has merit when it gets a bit cooler. What does everyone think?

I'd be interested in an Aussie themed gathering. I don't even mind if you we let a few outsiders in.

AFL finals are coming up - that could be a good excuse to kick something off.
