I'm just curious as to how a helper's bed is different to a normal bed?

I translate that post as "I don't value my helpers health as much as my own, so I only want a second hand bed for her".

I'm sure the helper will be much more capable of a good day's work if she gets a good night's sleep - so perhaps you might get her a new one!

ummm, no... i think the "helpers bed" is either a bed on top of some draws/cupboards so that they can have both in a small room, or a bed made on legs that are about 5 foot high so a dresser and storage space can be used underneath the bed.

it sounds less than ideal, but in a country where traditionally helpers have been given a tiny room and nowhere to put anything after they put the bed in the room, this sort of bed allows the helper to have some storage space for belongings and have a bed.

i must admit, they made me cringe when i first saw them, but i have heard of MUCH less desirable arrangements. this is a very happy middle ground in comparison... seriously...

You can try The Expatriates guide to property, careers, travel and entertainment in Asia for classifieds. When we bought the bed for our helper we had a problem because the length of the room is 1.84 and most beds are 2.00 meter. We had our bed made in Wan Chai (don't know the name of the store but let me know if you want to know, then I'll look it up, was something with a T...)
The helpers room is very tiny so the bed has lots of space under so she can store het stuff.

Thank you for all those smart and valuable comments....
To answer your questions... haven`t you ever bought second hand for yourself? The only way a helper bed is different from other beds is size.

I realise this forum is not only to help others but also for all those who are bored and can get out their frustration by writing anonymous comments ....

I appreciate the helpful comments. I also found two stores that provide that sort of bed.

With respect, my comments are not anonymous. And if your post had been clearer they would not have been needed.

Here's a better thread.

Custom made furniture for domestic helper

And yes, all the red dots handed out on this thread have been from me. First time ever too ...

KIA - first half of my post was to clarify understanding of the question; second half to answer the question once clarified. It caused the OP to make her request clearer to clearly not uncalled for - as your unhelpful feedback to my post indicated.

Sure, perhaps I do think that the helper situation in HK is appalling, but I'm not going to shut up about it no matter how many red blobs you give me. Just because a few expats exploit the situation with kindness does not make it right.
