T8 and no work?

My friends in HK are telling me that they don't need to go to work if there is a T8. I guess this is only for certain industries, right?

Hi,

Legally you are not obliged to go to work....when T8 signal is raised; however as soon as T8 is lowered to T3, you are meant to go to work within 2 hours (unless it's already too late in the day).

This said, a lot of companies have their own rules but you will find that most expats will go to work (unless they need to take the Ferry and these aren't working)...you can always take a taxi but they raise their fees dramatically because they aren't insured.

As for the locals, they tend to take T8 as a day off! It is part of the culture...

So check with your HR department as to what the policy is for your company...and then you may decide to go to work no matter what or stay home ;-)

Or, like us, just work from home. Even though it looks nice now, be quite careful about going out if your office is far away as you may find the office shut when you get there. Much easier to work from home if that's what you have to do (I do). Also, although the MTR runs, many buses will not and taxis will be harder to find and more expensive as noted above

Most expats go to work?

Not my expat friends!! We are all at home taking it easy today and worrying about the possible direct hit.

Then I'll say you have assimilated to the culture

But as noted previously, some people who do not physically go to work, actually work from home.

All I say is that sometimes, the T8 signal are used too easily...I know there are rules to it but the last one was a joke.

Wimps!

I'm off to work to catch up on some stuff without having to worry about people calling and other annoyances.

I agree, but I think the signals are more for all the ships at sea than for us landlubbers.

As opposed to the US system which is more informative for people on land.

"last one was a joke"

i guess it depends on where you live...as noted in the other thread (from last time) NOT all areas are affected the same. the gov't raises the signals to keep as many safe from harm as possible. whether or not you agree with it doesn't matter. please remember, not everyone lives in mid-levels and works in central.
