FreeBSD Dedicated Server

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a good provider for servers in Hong Kong? Ideally I'd like a FreeBSD box but I would also be okay with RHEL or CentOS.

I don't mind if they're dedicated machines or virtual machines - but I would need root access.

Thanks in advance

Checking the large Hong Kong pr0n and warez forums: discuss.com.hk is hosted on City Telecom (H.K.) Ltd (ctihk.com), and mycould.com is hosted on HGC.

HK hosting is usually poor, if you can find FreeBSD hosting they're probably on v4 or similarly obsolete version.

Hmmm,

Well I guess I could host it from home / office. I have hosted kit in the UK which would make a great back up service - but now that I want to offer stuff locally, I figured it would be better to have a more nippy site available

At the moment I just have HKBB's 100M service - though there are now advertising the 200M service in my area.

Is it okay to host servers etc on these sorts of lines? Are the services offered by HKBB synchronous?

Thanks again!

HKBN have 100BB, 200BB, and 1000BB but the advertising is very misleading as these are only maximum speeds, and international is a lot less.

You can try going SDSL instead which is quite reliable but a lot pricier. After 25/25 speeds you're looking at MPLS and the sales teams start salivating.

What you're looking for is an symmetrical connection from HGC.

HGC

They can go as high as 10Mbps on a VDSL circuit (we have one of those) for $3-4K a month.

DO NOT go with one of the residential packages, they're not going to handle any significant traffic.

One of the businesses I run supplies that optical transceivers (sfp) for their network.

I found that the the low speed services like 25MB gve sustained rates of around 60Mbit probably as their rate limiting doesn't work on all the parts of their network. Their coverage is limited and not sure if their network stability is good enough for hosting.

Dont get anything that uses PCCWs vDSL circuits as they don't perform. The local loop seems very oversold.

Hi guys,

Really appreciate all the feedback on this!

I guess I'm surprised that no one offers hosting facilities inline with what you can get elsewhere. I wonder if there is a business opportunity there...

They don't offer it because its not demended.

You can always rent some rack space and colo your server if you want.

Colo providers here compete on price and metric specs (such as the Ghz on the cpu) that people understand and do a poor service on the rest. Providing a good and higher price = no customers.

Not many care in HK and not many are educated enough to judge a quality service they are only able to describe the problems they have.

Even large companies will go for the cheapest thing they can find.

There are top teer service providers at a premium for the finance industry etc.
