Thanks everyone. I'm leaning towards a TX at the moment.

Does anyone know where I can test one of these things thoroughly? I could always go to Fortress, but the sales people there usually seem to begrudge breaking open new boxes.

I'll join in recommending a Palm. I suggest you wander down to Wanchai computer centre, where there should be a few places which can sell you one - and they'll generally be happy to let you have a bit of a play around. They'll also probably be happy to make a deal, since unfortunately Palm devices sell terribly nowadays - I got $1000 off a Treo against the RRP last year, pretty much just by flashing some cash and asking them for a good price.

(For what it's worth, I now have a G900 after the Treo had a catastrophic floor/screen interaction a couple of months ago. Nice phone, but absolutely not what the OP wanted)

Thanks, I'll check out WCC. I'd never noticed PDAs there before.

I suspect that the almost perfect device for my requirements would be an iLiad (ILiad (E-book Reader - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)), but they don't look to be available here at all. Bummer.

jgl : the illiad is f'ing expensive for what it does. if you're looking for an e-book reader, find someone to buy you an amazon kindle in the US and ship to you.

I saw them advertising the Iliad in Dymocks in IFC yesterday as a special order, along with a beautiful - but apparently rather useless - e/audio book download station. I bought the dead tree book I'd gone in for...

I *think* that the iLiad is also an input device, which sets it apart from something like the Kindle. But yes, it's bleedin' expensive.

Lulumay- I've got a couple of questions that hopefully you can answer.

What's the web browser like on the TX?

And can you use the sync software over a wifi connection, or do you need to use the USB cable?

the iphone or the ipod touch is much better. the screen on the tx is about the same size as the apples but the zoom function works wonders on the iphone.

i've had never sync over wifi. don't know if you can. very simple networking capabilities. i charge and sync at the same time with the usb cable.

my tx is my internet radio right now. you are welcome to take it if you replace it with a stand alone wifi internet radio.

I'm going to use it for notes and lists. Lists would need to sync with Outlook. If I have to sync, I'd prefer to do wirelessly.

The web browser thing is kind of a bonus. That was the one thing I really liked with the iPhone (and the zoom feature was ace). It was just all the other stuff about the iPhone which I didn't like!

Thanks for the kind offer- I know even less about internet radios than PDAs though
