I think you're actually wrong, the thickness of tarmac as well as quality (as well as width used on motorways. highways and autobahns) will determine the safety speed limit, hence why the national speed limit of uk roads is at 70mph (@ 25cm-30cm tarmac depth), while german autobahn literally no speed limit (@ 70cm tarmac depth).

This was confirmed on UK's Top Gear TV show when Jeremy Clarkson was driving ( i think i can rememeber) a bugatti veryon on the autobahn at ridiculous speeds to race two other presenters catching other forms of transport and he describe why the tarmac depth is so thick in germany's autobahn and its correlation to its lack of speed limit ( also explains why german car manufacturer's models have such high engine displacement and bhp)

To give you an idea of some effective bus lanes already in HK

- Southbound run-up to Lion Rock Tunnel
- Cut through at Canal St in CWB
- Elements shopping centre to WHT
- Long cut to Central Harbour Tunnel

The basic problem with creating bus lanes in a city centre with limited room for road building (i.e. most cities in Europe & HK), is the need to take away current priority for single occupancy cars and give it to 50 people on a bus.

All three x-harbour tunnels could have a bus priority lane. If the lane is not full then sell the spare capacity for those willing to pay extra. Congestion free roads are not a right.

If you look at the southbound traffic going through the EHT in a morning then there are approx 8 toll booths. 2 are autopay.
Just simple adding a couple more auto-pay booths on the left hand side and a few cones could allow busses to have priority in this tunnel.

At the moment the very left hand autopay always has a queue of buses waiting for it while cars whizz past. Obviously a sensible stragtegy by the tunnel owner. The busses are coming through regardless so no need to offer them any service levels. best to keep as much capacity for cars as possible to get more punters through the tunnel.

There are over 10,000 buses in HK with only 22Km of bus lane. Obviously it is difficult to create extra from existing roads as it upsets car owners.

You should be running for office. I am sure we can create another useless position at the Department of traffic just for you. What you have pointed out is completely irrelevant to the question - "Why so few bus lanes?" The question is not how much tv you watch.

do you really think the government has decided not to put in bus lanes because of the existing tarmac thickness? If you grease head assumption is correct that our tarmac is only 2 mm thick, is it really that hard to make it thicker.

When Citybus or KMB decides to use bugatti veryons as buses, we can start another thread. In the mean time, stop making excuses. stop providing irrelevant information. If you don't understand the question and its context, put your remote control and textbooks away and stop posting.

I thought the reason there aren't loads of bus lanes everywhere is that the people who run/own Hong Kong don't travel by bus.
