What is SHROFF?

I see this everywhere, I have just about worked out that it means somewhere you pay. But anyone any idea what the word means or where it comes from? Such a strange word!

Cheers! I liked Skyhook's guesses at the origin, although I note nobody ever confirmed for sure.....

I was always told it has Indian origins, I guess from the British days. We like to pronounce the word as if throwing up. Gives us a laugh anyway.

>> Mr Shroff

Don't be too surprised if there was indeed a Mr Shroff involved. Shroff is a common Parsi name and the Parsi community has been in Hong Kong for over a century. Again, Indian / middle eastern (Persian) roots.

sgander is on a distinguished road
Shroff is indeed a Parsi word and it means "one who deals in money". Parsi businessmen often worked hand-in-glove with the British during the time of the Raj and the Brits appropriated the name. The Shroff family in Hong Kong is one of the largest and most philanthropic families here dating back to the 1900s.
