Red face First timer - nervous! Need partner visa advice

Hi all,

My first post here, but I'm very impressed with the site (creep creep). It's by far the best HK resource I've come across yet by far! I apologise in advance as this thread is quite similar to the one a couple below in the list!

Anyway, the short story is - there's a chance I may be moving to HK later this year to work for a company there. I've heading over next month for a month to check things out, so it's quite exciting!

However, I'd like to know how the work visa system works. My girlfriend and I are both UK residents, but I will be sponsored for a work visa by the company. From what I've read here, the 'de-facto partner' status which can be applied in other countries to get working peoples partners a work visa does not apply in HK. Because of this, she's worried she'll have a short time (90 days I think) if she comes over with me, to find a job in which the skills 'are in short supply' (???) so that she can get sponsored for the visa.

Can you help me here:

1. Is there any way to get a 'de-facto' partnership type visa, or is it : get a job with sponsorship -> get a visa.
2. If it's the job - is there anywhere I can read about 'skills in short supply' to get an idea if she'll have a chance!
3. Any other options for her to work!?
4. Can someone tell me how the HK ID card system works and what it's all about (a link would be great so as not to waste your time!)

I'm quite happen to read through the necessary info if you can point me in the direction of the necessary immigration links etc... but I thought I'd ask the people in the know first!

Seems like from another post that she'll have to do a China jump every 3 months to get a returning visitors visa extension...

Thanks in advance for any help... might be seeing you next month!

R.
