Sony Ericson phones on Peoples

Is anyone using Sony Ericson phones on Peoples network? What is the browsing like?

It does seem that Sony Ericson phones don't support EDGE. What is the performance like when browsing or downloading? Is it bound to single GPRS channel?

I am, and it's usually pretty decent - but I do mainly use Opera Mini instead of Opera Mobile, until they get around to 9.5 for UIQ3. I seem to be getting 40kbps sitting in an office in Central...

40kbit/s On my Nokia I get sustained rates of about 26KByte/s when it is connected to my PC's USB.

Ok I bought the Sony, I get about 9KB/s on Opera Mobile. Not sure if that data is compressed at the PPP level though. I recall that Palm has compression that really cranks up the throughput, you should turn it on if you are still using it. Do note that compression is not switched on all of Peoples GPRS gateways and sometimes you will not be able to connect when you use compression.

Opera Mini is not a good method to benchmark due to the latency to their servers. Also who knows how compressed are the "KB" displayed.

Sorry, I guess I should have said, but I used Opera Mobile (the built-in browser) for the speed test, so it's relatively reliable - as much as speed tests ever are, of course.

I'm not using a Palm anymore - I had a screen smashing incident and decided that since they had effectively not released any new phones for a couple of years, I'd get a Symbian phone instead...

i believe that the people's network is pretty poor throughout hk, though it's not as bad as pccw or even worse 3 ( feel sorry for official iphone owners).

so regardless of which phone you're using, you will find it hard to connect for data transmission in the first place on peoples.

I can tell you that sony ericsson phones ( well, current ones, eg, w760, c902, etc. as well as other makes) uses HSPDA which is really fast (at least 3 times) compared to edge when browsing ( not too sure on ave. kps though)

Peoples may have been poor in the past, but they are quite good nowadays particularly after China Unicom bought them.

They are not as cheap as they appear but their GPRS/EDGE packages are the deal clincher. As they have a low blackberry user count compared to CSL etc, so they have a lot more spare capacity on GPRS/EDGE bandwidth.
