Well, I am a local Chinese, first of all, but I was living in US for 2 years, now working for a Japanese Company. The reason I am here, is that I would love to make some new western friends here to broaden my social life.

One of the ways I've connected with locals is through sports. I'm a big Arsenal fan and often attending "watching" parties with the local Arsenal supporters group, sometimes the expat crowd and sometimes the local group. It's a good way to meet folks--different cultures, but one mutual interest.
