| HK-raised ABC wants to teach English. Please advise! Hi everyone, I am an American born Chinese, raised in HK, went back to the States for Uni and work and now wish to return to HK. I received my Bachelors in Finance but don't really want to go back to that field, so I'm thinking about getting my TEFL online cert. and then looking for a job teaching English. Do I have good chances of finding a job? I am getting the impression that many places prefer Caucasians when it comes to these types of jobs. I can speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin fluently, will that give me an edge? Can anybody offer any insight? Many thanks! PS: oh, and if anyone has any online TEFL programs they can recommend, that would also be greatly appreciated! Last edited by dboo; 08-08-2008 at 02:58 AM. |

| I got my TEFL through i-to-i. If you're good, you can still find plenty of positions. You do have a comma splice in your post though. You may have an edge with your Cantonese and Mandarin ability too, although if you're an English teacher, you shouldn't use it in the classroom. | i've just hired an australian chinese to teach at my playgroup. i've had to explain to some parents that just because she has a chinese face does not mean she speaks poor english. they(the parents) do like the white face, but it won't be impossible to find a job either. |

| Thank you both for taking the time to reply. And thanks Jay for exposing my punctuation error! |

| Who gave me negative rating for this? Someone from this thread just gave me a negative rating for my innocent suggestion above with the comment of "Um, what part of want to return to Hong Kong didn't you read?" In deed I read what the OP said. I was merely suggesting he/she could try to teach foreigner (IN HK) Chinese since it was indicated he/she speaks Chinese. This forum is about giving people suggestion or advice, right or wrong, they can take it or leave it. There is really no need for this. You know who you are and if you have the guts, you could disagree with me before going around giving people bad ratings. Last edited by huash1; 09-09-2008 at 01:53 PM. |
