Going for short vacation in September

The typical 3 days, 3 nights.

Last time I was there was back in 1995 when HK was still under British government. Just wanna know, whats good to buy in September...maybe clothes? Electronics like cell phone or PSP?

Thanks in advance.

I don't think the prices on anything are particularly seasonal. Where are you coming from? If it's not a USD economy then various things may look cheap. But if from the US then HK isn't particularly a shopping destination these days.

I'm coming from the Philippines.

Last time I was there was February 1995 so there must be some changes. I can see a lot of electronic items for sale in ebay hongkong thats cheap so I'm wondering if these are for sale too in personal at the same price.

Thanks for your reply.

The impression I get (from my wife, who is a Filipina) is that very cheap clothes and high-end clothes are much the same price in HK and The Philippines, but that there are clothes available in HK which are good quality but not such a high price as in The Philippines. She shops for T-shirts, polos, kids clothes and so on in the streets and markets around Johnston Road in Wanchai, but I guess there are similar (and perhaps slightly cheaper) places on Kowloon side.

For electronics & cell phones for items that are available in both countries there doesn't seem to be much difference in price, but HK has many items which aren't easily available in The Philippines. Remember though that many items bought in HK have a warranty valid only in HK, so I wouldn't recommend buying very expensive stuff here, in case it breaks.

Personally, I consider most electronics and homewares items to be cheaper in Manila.

Clothing is a different story though, with some things being cheaper in Hong Kong especially when there is a sale.

Thanks for your replies.

We're going there last week of August and we are staying at the Kowloon side. I guess I just have to buy clothes then.

Just in case, where in HK is good to buy electronics stuff?

It depends what type of electronics, but Ap Liu St in Sham Shui Po (Kowloon side) is the place most mentioned.

Agreed with PDLM but if you're after electronics etc then be careful as some of the items are refurbished stock and possibly previously stolen and dressed up to look like as new.

Take your sim card with you and test it when you're there, Check that the battery is a genuine manufacturers one and not some generic brand from china.

Be wary of the bait and switch method as well where they will get out a genuine one for you to test and play with and when you're not looking they'll swap if for a refurbished one etc.

Just don't let yourself get distracted and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the tip PDLM and JIMBO.

I'm actually interested in PSP and Car stereos (DVD head units) but if they're selling cheap XDA's there then I might give it a shot as my XDA2 is long due for a replacement.
