HSBC Bank Account - Proof of Residential Address?

I went to HSBC yesterday trying to open a bank account. I have with me a letter from my employer, temporary HKID, and my passport. HSBC wouldn't take me and they requested a proof of my residential address. When I asked the customer representative what kind of proof they need, she gave me a very good example - bank statement! So my question is what's the quickest way to get a proof of residential address? I've been at HK for only a few days and I'm staying in a temporary serviced apartment. Thank you all.

Almost any invoice received locally will work.

Does your company have an account with HSBC? Have your finance guy introduce you if you continue to have problems.

Post a letter to yourself and take the envelope to the bank [better still send a registered letter using your company stationery]

You can also ask your employer to give you another letter stating your address. That worked for me.

I had the same problem when I tried to open an account. What they did in the end was use my UK address on my driving licence as my residential address and then my HK address as my correspondance address. I did this at the airport branch of HSBC. Hope this helps!!

thats probably best option, however I would suggest going to the main HSBC building on 1st floor and getting this done.

Thank you all. I got a copy of the receipt of my rent paid to the serviced apartment, took it to the a nearby HSBC branch but they still wouldn't take it. So I brought it to another branch. You know what? They accepted it and opened the account for me!

Welcome to the "world's local bank". Now, get a CC real soon and start the big spending.

Oh yeah, I hear about such displays of incompetance all the time at HSBC. Nothing new .. Just glad they got their internet banking sorted out, so my interactions with the humans who work there are minimal.
