wii and wired internet access

Hi all,

I recently bought a Wii LAN adapter for my wii, but cannot get set up online (we don't have wireless so I'm going for the wired option).

I get broadband (along with NOW tv) from PCCW with a modem and was assuming I could just use the same cable to connect to the LAN adapter, but I just keep getting error messages.

I think this may be due to the fact that I have to log on with password, everytime I use the internet on my pc and maybe the wii doesn't have this capacity(?). When I spoke to PCCW they said that their modem was only for broadband and Now Tv, but I can't believe their users in HK aren't using their Wiis online. The nintendo supports docs on the website aren't helping me either...

Any ideas on how to get online?

Thanks
C

I would guess this is because NowTV is an ADSL (pppoe) connection and, as you say requires a username and password combination to be used when connecting to the Internet. Your Wii connection will most likely not be 'aware' of this and is expecting a direct Internet connection.

Your best best is probably to buy a router/switch which can do the pppoe connection to the ADSL (nowTV) modem, and share the Internet connection for you. Your Wii would then plug into the router (as well as any other Internet connecting devices you have)

Thanks for that, as I'm not very computer savvy, is this just a matter of going into a computer shop and asking for a router switch?

And will everything they give me do the job? Or do I need more info in relation to compatibility, types of port etc?

If the Wii is like the xbox 360 you can parameter your pppoe connection on it.

Any internet connection setting on your Wii you can imput ur log in and password ?

I'll check later today. As far as I know there are some settings for logins on the Wii.

You could just get a cheap wired router, put it between your modem and computer, program the router according to the manual to automatically log in to PCCW's network then plug the Wii to the router.
A slightly more costly option would be to go for a wireless router. Your modem and computer may be close enough to stay wired but the Wii could connect wirelessly to the router.

Q4 in the Troubleshooting FAQ suggests that you can't do PPPoE logins on the Wii, so you'll likely need a router. Since you're going to get a router you might as well get one with wireless capability as well since they are very cheap these days.

It's like HK$300 for a wireless router? I'm sure the Nintendo LAN adapter costs more. Make sure you get a stock 802.11g, none of the MIMO 802.11 draft stuff that advertises above 54mbps speeds as they're all incompatible proprietary technologies and not worth the cash.

Been debating whether to get a Nintendo LAN adapter (or something cheaper that works as well) or just buy a wireless router.

I don't really need wireless because my Wii is right beside my modem though.

Anyone know where to buy a cheap USB LAN adapter that works on the Wii?

Thanks for that, think I'll just have to go and buy a router. The LAN adapter wasn't that expensive ($118) in Wanchai, but I was sort of hoping that was all I'd have to spend.
