I've been there many times and have never paid a cover charge. It might be more understandable during NYE or if it is really packed (which it often is)..

At least you don't have to become a member there like many other places around town, but they seem to be quite unpredictable with their entrance policy.

The only time that I've encountered anything at the door is when I took along a couple visitors from France - they got asked for ID. This was not unreasonable given that their written door policy is a 25 year minimum and the two were only 20 :P

I was once almost denied re-entry after being almost a victim of theft there (long story, but pls take care of your belongings there as with other places!), which I thought would have been unfair.

But your age is not something you can do anything about any more than the colour of your skin, so why is a "no one under 25 policy" any more acceptable than a "no people with dark skin" policy?

At least with the minimum age policy, everyone underage will generally turn 25 eventually, however skin color will not change (unlike you are maybe Michael Jackson) me suspects that a maximum age policy may be more controversial, even though everyone will in the natural course get older..

Maximum age policies will never make business sense. Age and spending power correlate quite well.

The point remains that if you can reliably identify a people who will not spend money in your establishment if you let them in then is it not reasonable that they should have to pay a cover charge? Bars are businesses not charities.
So why don't these places let us know in advance that we can't come in, rather than letting us in for free sometimes and then sometimes asking for money.

Also has it been established that certain races spend less than others and therefore should be charged for entering into bars?

Maybe it would be better if bars just charged poor people from entering, as they, naturally, being poor won't spend as much as rich people.

I hear it's par for the course to get in free if you're white in certain upscale clubs in HK.

*shrugs*

This is exactly the problem - no not at all. As far as I can see race is no use at all as a predictor of how much someone will spend in a bar.

Race can certainly be a factor but it's not just that in HK

Some clubs are also about certain 'looks'. For example, a white friend of mine who has been refused entry into a club is quite well off and would spend a fair bit on drinks but tends to look a bit on the un-trendy side.. ladies find it easier to get into clubs in general although once a fairly good looking friend of mine was refused entry as she was wearing thongs (flip flops).

I feel obliged to wear certain types of clothes in different types of clubs - snazzy outfits in shiny bars and more casual ones in places like yum la.

Race, looks, fashion, money - a fairly short and cynical description of a fair part of HK night life unfortunately, in a nutshell.
