Daft white boy wants to move to Hong Kong

Well, not all that daft. I used to live in HK about fifteen years ago, and came back recently with my fiancee (a HK girl born and bred, though UK resident for nearly 10 years now) and realised how much I still loved the place.

However the job market sounds a bit grim from what i've seen - though i'm well qualified (MBA, 8 years experience in my field - Business Intelligence/Management information in the Insurance industry), but speak only a smattering of Cantonese and intermediate Japanese (fat lot of use in HK, i'm sure ).

So, am I micturating in adverse weather conditions, or has this chi sin gwai lo got a chance? Anyone capable of offering advice/good headhunters/ a job? (he he). Or should I just stick to (not so) dull old London?

Sounds like you have your residency -- ( were you an exbrat? ). You sound like you are more qualified than half the punters we meet around here.

Why not come over and test the waters. Plenty of work being done in the insurance side in Hong Kong preparing for the China markets to err ... open up.

As I understand it you can get a 3 months working visa in the "entertainment" business in Wanchai fairly easily.

thanks.. but well ..let me tell you the whole story first.. if you dont mind..i've just came here together with my norweigian bf from phil..just for a holiday..then he's got 90 days of stay here..then ..me as a filipina..14 days.. then ..we thought its just gonna be easy to ask for extension..coz we just want to spend at least 3 months of stay here then after we're planning to go to norway or for some more nice places to go..he's just like a traveller..and he wants to take me wherever he goes..and of course he can afford all that stuff.. so thats it.. we went to macau before my visa expires..then they also gave me another 14 days.. but just yesterday..we go to wan chai immig. department..as a friend advise us and we thought its easier..but we felt so bad.. when the officer gave me only 7 days then made me a promise in writings that i should depart this march 08.. i understand the rules and everything.. and i cant help it..i feel really degraded..as a filipina.. im not doing anything bad or illegal here in hk..we just want to have fun and enjoy life.. so after that..as far as i know.. if i wanted or if i try to ask for an extention again..either in macau/shenzhen.. they said that it is more possible for me to get a shorter days..just like.. from 7 days..to 5 ,3 or even one day.. well..i can leave the country..in anytime with or without my bf.. but its just really makes me feel bad thinking about it.. i actually dont know..what im gonna ask for you about this.. thanks anywayss

Exbrat? Probably - was here aged about 11-17.

Would love to test the waters - actually have somewhere I could stay for free, but can't really afford to just up sticks and move over on spec (the future Mrs MonkeyDoctor would have words with me). I just want to have some idea of whether I have a snowballs chance of getting a worthwhile job, and some hints on where to look. Any guidance is much appreciated as most job sites I can find on the net are geared towards locals as far as I can tell...

Crat -- Anything is possible with immigration if you approach them correctly. Now stop being a brat and hijacking this thread -- go find your own one.

>> whether I have a snowballs chance of getting a worthwhile job

Well, given that most posts by job hunters are fairly glorified self-created opinions of ones self, I'd say yes, you do have a snowballs chance.

Unfortunately the best source for job adverts these days is the saturday newspaper -- several dozen pages of job ads -- which as far as I know does not have all the ads listed online.

Best bets are to find someone within your peer group or extended set of friends ( 1 or 2 degrees apart.... type) who would know someone in the industry. But then you knew that right ....

Cardany, nothing in this story is about race - it relates to nationality. If Crat married her Norwegian boyfriend and took Norwegian citizenship her race wouldn't change but she could stay for 3 months. Conversely, if he decided to take Filipino citizenship his stay would be curtailed to 14 days. It is a shame that the term racist is used so indiscriminately and wrongly these days.
