British visitor 180 day visa question Hi, I have a question that some fo you may be able to help me with. I am a UK national with a British passport. I will be coming to HK in December. I understand that I will normally be given 180 days to stay in HK. My questions are- a) If I go to China and re-enter do they give me a new start date and let me stay 180 days from the second entry? b) Am I allowed to spend only 180 total days out of 365 in HK per year? Thanks.

As per Boris but you can do the visa run a few times but any more than that they'll eventually start questioning you as to why you're spending so much time here in HK etc.

To be clear, on a Visitor Visa you may not "work, study, establish or join in any business or to take up residence in the HKSAR". So why exactly do you want to be in HK for more than 180 days in a year?

OK thanks. I was going to use HK as a base while I tour Asia. Also I wanted to open some investment accounts there. I would not be taking up employment in HK.

I guess there is nothing stopping someone coming to HK, as long as they have sufficient funds, and stay for a full 180 days to do what they please. |

Or, in fact, for much longer than that. If you've got the money (or the foreign income) to live here without working, immigration don't seem to be in any hurry to kick out white and/or western long-term 'visitors'. Yes, it's somewhat racist...

I'm British, soon to move to HK. I've not done too much reading yet about the visa situation in HK, and I may answer my own question in due course, but once I find a job in the city, should be relatively simple to get the work visa? I'm aware that the question of whether the foreigner's job can be performed by a local seems to be a big issue - in practice, how easily is this satisfied? Cheers.

Provided you can get the job described "right" - fairly easy. We got somebody in who could easily have failed the test if they had wanted to strictly enforce it and no problems.
