i rem i was in bethelam and this chinese was conned into buying one of those sourvenir headdress of arafat at 50usd.. when the next hawker beside was selling at less than 1...

i wld have tot chinese are alot sharper than that. 8-P

I think the easiest way not to get scammed is not to go for deals that look too good to be true, and only take risks in fields that you have experience in.

True, it could happen anywhere i the world but in HK and China, it is harder to find information prior to commiting to anything, it is still such an opaque country. In the US everything is blogged about, here there are only 1 (GeoExpat) or at best 2 blog sites/forums which can be relied upon....

Could this possibly be somehow related to the fact that you speak the language of the USA and not the language of China? I'm reasonably sure that there is no shortage of information online about scams in HK - but it's in Cantonese.

Oh, but I guess you're American, so it's the rest of the world's fault for not speaking English...

And you still have problems finding information about stuff? My perception (as a non-reader of Chinese) is that there are huge numbers of forums in HK discussing all sorts of stuff.
