Hi there. I left in Causeway Bay (Exit D) and I usually pick up food from Times Square (Exit A). Now I was wondering whether I can use the indoor walkway (underground) and enter the station from Exit A and then get out at Exit D near Sogo and NOT get charged. I essentially want to avoid the heavy rush outside in the evening.

They charge you about 3-60 to do this - I've done it before running around Central-Hong Kong station when I ended up on the wrong side and just could not be bothered to go up!

well, I did this once in February. It was my first trip to HK and of course I got lost in the station. I wasn't charged at all. I had just bought a brand new card and my $150 was still $150 after I got out the station. So I thought, wow, what a nice place!

We had to do that once and got charged. Surprised bumpkin wasn't charged. Maybe it is station/time dependent?

When you enter the paid area for and then leave you should be charged $3. When you stay for more than around 5-10 minutes it charges you $10.

The MTR T&Cs say that if you exit the same station more than 20 minutes after you enter it then you will be charged $10. But my reading of the T&Cs is that, by implication, if you leave the same station within 20 minutes then you should not be charged (there is an exception for Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau where you will be charged the fare for the shortest possible journey).

This happened to me in Kwai Fong (I went out the wrong exit) and it charged the $3 for a 20 second MTR walk.

Charged us 3 yesterday to (deliberately) walk from Central to Hong Kong station. (we were happy to pay for the aircon for the 10 min walk underground to IFC from just outside Hutchinson House...)

I've done the same (and was charged) to avoid the rain from SOGO to Times Square in CWB.
