writing cheques in Hong Kong

Is it possible to write cheques in Hong Kong in all retail stores?

Are there cheque guarantee cards like in the UK?

I don't think it is so easy to use cheques in stores here, and I don't think there is a scheme like the UK cheque guarantee card.

What is very common though (apart from cash and credit cards) is what is known here as EPS, which is the same as Switch / Delta debit cards in the UK - in other words you use you ATM card and PIN at a terminal at the shop and the money is taken straight from your bank account.

For large purchases, should you really need to pay by check (over the EPS limit etc) the vendor will hold the delivery of the products until the check has been cashed.

I remember a friend purchasing a pair of shoes at Lane Crawford by cheque. They asked her to come back after 3-4 days to pick up the shoes once the cheque had cleared.
