any recommendation for a good and reasonably priced hotel in Macau for a weekend escape?

If you really want a weekend escape, really getting away from it all. The Pousada De Coloane Beach Hotel, certainly does a great job.

Depends on what your idea of escape is I suppose. If you plan to walk around and do a bit of touristy stuff that doesn't involve casino's, enjoying the local fair etc, including the best egg tart bakery in the region, Coloane is a nice peaceful spot.

For around $800 a night, this family run Portuguese centric Hotel, will offer something a little slower paced, set in enjoyable surrounds,ie beach, mountains, and greenery. All rooms have a balcony, and the superior rooms have a spa bath in the bath room. Located 20 minutes taxi ride away from Stanley Ho's neon clad Casino district...

I stayed at the Pousada de Coloane beach hotel 15 years ago my first trip. It turned out that the proprietors wife and my housekeeper were old friends so my group got a very good discount!!

to me Venetian is everything that's wrong with the NEW MACAO...

Pousada de Sao Tiago is certainly a better choice - if you have the money - to experience the historical macao.

If you want a peacful retreat Westin can also fit the bill

The Venetian is interesting as a tourist spectacle and not much else. Huge rooms, but the furniture is cheap and flashy. The check-in service is a joke with mainlanders queue jumping at every opportunity, and the food in the foodcourts and from room service is barely edible. Still, you should probably visit once just to see what it's like.

I'm trying the Westin next time I'm in town. Has anyone been to the Mandarin Oriental there?

If it was me I would go for the Westin. We have stayed there and also the Venetian. Entirely depends on what kind of holiday you want. If you want lively and different and loads of stuff to do and HUGE, go Venetian. If you want quiet, peaceful, relaxing, beach and sea views, away from it all, go Westin. But similar in price.

Try the Riviera ( used to be Ritz ).
We did a Thurs, Friday and Saturday for HKD( MOP ) 1700 booked on the net.
Just been refurbished and does not have a casino !!. Sea views look out to the bay with the Tower. Tele has English channels.

Bus service shared with 3 other hotels and run every 30 mins . 15 buck in a taxi to Wynns.

For old world charm, the Pousada de Sao Tiago beats everything hands down and it's been recently renovated. It's 5-star in the 50s if you get that. 5-Star James bond would go to.. For people who like modernity and hordes of tourists take your pick of the other places.
