Happy Hammer is on a distinguished road
UK-based financial planner

Hi all,
I am a UK based Financial Planner and am thinking of moving to HK to continue my career as I am a little bored/stale in the UK. I am a genuine IFA with quite a few qualifications etc and I am not a salesman in the old school way.

From my research and from reading the other threads, the industry in HK is pretty competitive (as it is in the UK), with a lot of sharks, who are commission hungry and have little actual knowledge of financial planning. Not all are like this I know...

Do I have any hope in getting a job at a decent firm, so I can earn well or am I doomed to life in good old London? Is there any demand for an IFA in HK or are people fed up of being constantly cold-called by morons?

Any advice/tips/suggestions would be greatly appreciated…

Many thanks,
Happy Hammer

Without fluent Cantonese I would think a job as an IFA would be zero earning here. Also you would have to resit the legal financial examinations to qualify.

LOTS of gwailo IFAs here.. Usual thing is to setup as an unregulated insurance advisor (piss poor regulation) and hustle investment products.

If you're serious about a career that does not involve cold calling and hustling .. take a look at the top tier banks and their wealth managment groups. The expat centric ones will not need Canto.

Thanks again

KnowItAll - are there any particular firms that you would recommend me approach? Not necessarily a personal recommendation, but names of companies that have a decent reputation.

Much appreciated.
