Entering HK from ...?

My situation is kinda unique but I'm hoping someone here may be able to offer some advice. I'm a Chinese passport holder and is currently applying for a work visa to Hong Kong based on my residence in overseas (United States) for over a year. The form I submitted was ID(E)936. After my employer submitted the application, the Immigration Department requested a letter from me stating that I will be entering HK from overseas (they didn't specify which country but specifically excluded mainland China, Taiwan or Macau). Does that mean I have to enter Hong Kong from United States? What about other countries? The problem is, I booked the ticket to fly to HK on February 28 but my visa application is still pending. My employer told me that if the visa is not approved by then, I can go to HK on a transit basis and when the visa is approved, get out and then re-enter HK to validate the visa. But that triggers the issue of from where I should re-enter HK. Obviously mainland China is not an option any more, and I don't want to fly 30 hours back and forth between US and HK. Did anyone have the same experience before? Any advice?

Most people do what your talking about and arrive in Hong Kong and get there visa then go to macau or china and then reenter.

Now as you say you cant do that then i guess th only option for you is this

Delay your flight until the visa is approved.
or if the countrys that are excluded are only the ones you list think about another one the closest is Manila in the Philippines about 1 hour 30 from HK or longer thailand.

THanks for the info! So at least I'm not required to enter HK from U.S., but any country other than China should work, right?

Just got words from my employer that my work visa has been approved, so I don't need to worry about the issue any more. In any event, thank you for your advice.
