Toys R Us would be your most comprehensive choice, especially considering your child's age group.

The closest store is located in TST

I think the automatic suggestion would be Toys R Us (nearest, TST) because for one's 3-year-old, one may not want him/her handling the more cheaply-made, so perhaps not up-to-standard playthings that are widely available in smaller side-street Mongkok shops. Hm, also remember that there's another Toys R Us in Kowloon Tong's top-floor Festival Walk mall - like TST, less than 15mins away by train.

Re: "Good" toy/kiddies shops in immediate Mongkok area
Not sure but try Grand Century Plaza (193 Prince Edward Road West) - a medium-sized mall near/above what used to be Mongkok KCRC, now part of the larger MTR network, and differentiated as East Mongkok Station, Exit D.

See GCP mall site: Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd.

A few little baby- and children-related outlets (maybe selling more than clothes?):

Kids Wonderland
Y not Kids
Sanrio Kids and Vogue
BeBe Dream
Plus, Jumpin Gym USA, etc.

If you still want to check out what locals and their kids like/buy, also try the side shops and stalls along/around Fa Yuen Street and Tung Choi Street, up Bute Street junction.

Yep, I second ToysrUs. Better not buy from market (like Ladies Market or Temple Street) because of poor quality
