The Foreign Correspondent's Club

Hi,
my husband has been offered to join the foreign correspondent's club but I am worried it is not suitable for us.

We are in our early 30's and we are going to have a baby in the next few months....

Thanks in advance for any info and advise you can give us regarding this club

The FCC is great for food and drinks. The occasional game of Pool. It's def. not for the kids.

Its not a family club like many of the others in Hong Kong.

The FCC is pretty much a business / trade oriented club with the majority of the members from the legal, media, academic world. Its also home to many folks who just want a good place for dinners / drinks.

A friend (journalist type) once described it as a place where women with a past look for men with no future. It is a very profound observation in many respects...

No sorry - you're not suitable: you misplaced the apostrophe.

But seriously, it depends what you are looking for. The FCC is basically a couple of bars (one with live jazz/blues some nights and a pool table), a couple of restaurants, and a small but reasonably well-equipped health club. Children are only allowed in at weekends and only then in certain areas of the club (and allowing them at all is a recent change which there are attempts to overturn).

The food and most of the drinks are very good value (house spirits $21-24 with free mixers, all the time; house wine $24-35 / 150ml glass) so if you use it regularly you get you save your monthly subscription easily when compared to eating out elsewhere.

If you or your husband are in the media then it is a good place to be a member simply because of the networking with other people of the press and because of the media events that are held there.

But if you want a club where you can go with your baby and hang out with other mums then this is definitely not the place.
