Nokia aquires Symbian and to open sources the OS.

This is good news and a major kick in the teeth to apple

Apple's hype of 3rd party apps is not that relevant when the competition is given the source code away. Never mind the massive supply of software for Nokia's today.

It will be great if we can re-code and customers even older phones.

oh i thought initially Symbian was developed by Nokia themselves.

well if it will be open source that would be good news for Homebrewers

Symbian makes software for a bunch of companies. Nokia use to pay US$5 per copy of the operating system per phone.

They also bought a Linux based phone software company. I guess Symbian had to sell out or risk Nokia switching everything to Linux. Also Nokia needs the OS to be open source to crush the competition.

I was offered a job by Symbian in London in 2000 - I turned them down and went to work for Sun instead...

It might be good news for those with old Symbian smart phones, etc, but no one else cares. It's an old hat operating system for shitty hardware that is rapidly being replaced by generations of new hardware that can run full desktop applications. Why run a minority unsupported non-standard mini-browser when you can run Safari?

This is more about cleaning up any useful patents lingering about.

It's all about Windows Mobile vs. Linux with Google Android vs. Apple iPhone.
