Rescue dogs in HK

Hiya

Just wondering about the amount of rescue dogs in HK. Is it because people adopt them and dont realise the shipping costs to get them back to the UK
or USA etc. Do they just turf them out when they
come to the end of there contract and dont want
to pay?
I am coming over in August with my JRT and its
costing me £1000 to bring her which is a huge
amount of money - but she is one of the family
so thats just the way it goes.

Just interested?

I think the expat community has very little to do with the extent of dumped animals in HK.

Also, I don't think it is any worse here than in any other country, but I could be wrong.

But there is an undercurrent in HK of "don't like it? - dump it" with other possesions, so I supposed that some people who treat a pet as possesion have no qualms in dumping them once they have passed the cute fad, or when the pet becomes inconvenient to them.

On the flip side, I have seen a lot of HK locals go the extra mile to save a bedraggled stray... so it is hard to give an accurate generalisation...

We are wanting to get a dog when we arrive in HK and will be happy to look at adopting one...thing is I just read a horror story of a lady who had 2 dogs and was going home to Australia and Australian quarantine denied access for both dogs because they failed the blood test after contracting a sandfly disease in HK and she was thinking she might have to put them both down...she had had them for 4 and 6 years...I would be devastated if that happened...

consider the costs and the rules of sending them back home. there are several instances that these are the reasons why the dogs get dumped.

also other reasons i've seen is that when they have a new familymember, and the dogs or cats give them allergy.

And they might need surgery so get dumped, or they get too big, so they get dumped, or they get too old, so they get dumped or abandoned. As I see it, some HK locals don't value dogs like the Western expats do, so they don't feel guilty in the slightest when they dump them, or shift locations and leave the dog behind etc. I feel there's a hell of a lot of rescue dogs here, but as it's been mentioned, there's probably just as many in other countries.

also in HK its like a trend in fashion accessories, just like when the movie Below 8 came out, everyone wanted huskies, when they are born they are small in size but then in weeks they double and triple their size, most HK people live in flats with size of 500 sqft. its very hard to keep huskies in these places so they just get rid of them, 2 of my huskies i adopted them from people who didnt want them because they grew too big.

Here are some reasons cited for dumping the dog

- "We are leaving HK end of this month and sadly would not be able to bring her (the dog) along with her even though we would love to."

-WE our moving out of Hong Kong and hard as it is, I have still not found a home for our cat .

-This "dog" is looking for a new home, as his owner is moving to a new place, which forbids keeping dog.

(as Many flats in Hong Kong do not allow keeping of pets in their buildings)
