I read it the same was as Jaykay, it looked as if Araucaria was saying that the guy needed PR status to have a domestic helper, which is obviously rubbish.

I think Araucaria left out a word or two between 'he NEEDS'.

What do you think those two exclamation marks (!!) were for?

But if it's come down to apple's and orange's, never mind. My misjudgment.

I would be interested to hear what happens after this person submits his application to the Immigration Dept, with whatever relevant (perhaps, scant?) documentation he thinks should suffice in this particular case.

Over the yrs, I've briefly come across 1-2 expats who MORE than "get by" here by using their Native Eng-speaking skills as "teachers". They're unaware of &/or unconcerned about tax registration, MPF issues, etc. And, they're NOT just "dabbling" in English teaching here for "pocket money" for under a year, so that the MPF don't apply... Seems some of them have been assisted by rather dubious "ed" outfits, too.

What bothers me is the EXTENT some ever-eager-FOR-English locals allow themselves to be SO taken in, when there's often little improvement to merit the huge amounts spent, even after many mths...

Still, lots of friendly "exposure" to international people from other cultures & backgrounds is undoubtedly GOOD - just don't charge TOO much under the guise of teaching Eng? (Most of the poor students can ill afford it!)
